Personally, I found most of these opinions over-the-top. But today, I received an email from Dr Mani Sivasubramaniam where he shares his views on the changes. And, I must say that Dr Mani impressed me (yet again) with his article.

I am an admirer of Dr. Mani’s work and have been on his newsletter for a very long time. A pediatric cardiac surgeon by profession… he’s also one of the most sensible Internet Marketers I have seen out there.

I wanted to share Dr Mani’s email with you. Here’s what he has to say:

This is about “Storms In Tea-cups…”

For an unusually long period (or 3 months), the online marketplace had been somewhat stable. Not much changed.

Then, suddenly, there were some disruptions. Pretty big ones.

* Google Sidewiki
* FTC ruling on endorsements & ads
* Google Wave

and many more planned from Twitter and Facebook.

Not surprisingly, many people are doing a ‘Chicken Little’ and scurrying around predicting the death of everything Internet marketing.

I believe it’s a storm in a tea-cup

It matters ONLY IF you’re drinking tea from that cup

Let’s take up two of the issues that have passions running high on various busy meeting places (forums, blogs, and email groups).

It’s Google’s latest offering which gives ANYONE the chance to post a comment about your site - and have it displayed in a viewer’s Web browser RIGHT ON your site, framing your content.

Yes, that seems like something to worry about.

But before you go overboard, pause and think:

* Does your website get millions of visitors?
* Do your practices annoy a large share of them?
* Are you abrasive, nasty or scammy?
* Is what you do likely to turn visitors against you?

If you answered “No” to most of these questions, then next ask yourself what REALLY are the chances of anyone (even a trouble-maker with oodles of time on his/her hands) to come to your site, and post a negative comment on Sidewiki.

Pretty low, right?

Couple that with two things - that you have a process to register a complaint about it, and (if you’re listening to my suggestion) you’re building your own tribe of loyal supporters - and you’ll realize that anything negative on a sidebar will be COUNTERED by all the GOOD things your fans will say about you and your business.

Also, what kind of person believes absolutely slanderous stuff posted anonymously on the Web about you?

Not your really serious prospect!

No, those folks will do their research about you more meticulously - and if there’s a LOT of whining and
complaining about you going on around the Web, then a Sidewiki is the least of your troubles!

After almost two years in draft format, these go into force on December 1st, 2009.

And once again, a frisson of excitement (and near panic) has hit a marketplace of worried (if not fully informed) online infopreneurs and business owners.

The reality is FTC guidelines are only enforcing what should have ANYWAY been ‘best practices’ that you follow in your promotions and ads.

* Tell readers you’re profiting from endorsements
* Disclose any affiliations or advantages you’ve got (like free review copies or memberships)
* Mention typical results, not outstanding exceptions

Isn’t that what you’re already doing?

Or is your business rooted in promotions that showcase the FANTASTIC results obtained by the tiniest fraction of your buyers only?!

For years, I have abhorred the practice of manipulating crowds (of the wrong kind of prospects, who never had a chance of judging correctly because they were newbies, and were being hit by the worst form of psychologically convincing tricks) to dip deep into their wallets.

Or even spend money they didn’t have, couldn’t afford.

It’s also called “selling hope and a prayer - for big bucks”

Now, the FTC says that’s wrong, and not acceptable.

Why are YOU worried?

* Are you selling a $1,000+ product?
* Do fewer than 5% of your buyers benefit from it?
* Is your typical return/refund rate high?
* Does your ad copy include specific income claims?
* If you have affiliates, do they use deceptive tactics?

If you said “No” to these, then relax.

If you are practicing good, ethical marketing that is focused on your client/prospect, is always in THEIR best interest, and you deliver value that they appreciate, you have little to fear or worry about in these new regulations.

Of course, you need to study the guidelines and comply with them, if it applies to your business. Just don’t panic or let fear cloud your judgment. Be logical, systematic and adapt to the changes.

And get on with business as usual!

THE BIGGER PICTURE

In a shifting marketplace like the Internet arena, such change is ALWAYS a constant. It will happen all the time - often with startling suddenness.

If you’re not comfortable adapting and coping with it, there are two choices:

* Get comfortable

or

* Get OUT!

Yes. Change gets more frequent. And more sudden. And more radical.

Embrace, adapt and ENJOY it - or your day to day effort in your online business will become a misery.

There are things that are timeless and lasting. Real world business owners have practiced them for centuries.

* Being fair and honest
* Putting your clients’ interest first
* Delivering value at reasonable price
* Striving to improve your buyers’ life in some way
* Looking for win-win deals all the time

Follow these principles, align them with a worthy purpose, and don’t get distracted by the seductive promise of quick, easy riches - and you can ignore (or easily adopt) any new regulations, innovations and curve-balls the evolving marketplace online will throw at you.

Let storms in tea-cups worry others!

It’s only been 5 months since then and I have appeared on stage in 8 countries around the world. And I have many more queued up for the rest of the year. I guess that explains the absence of new posts at this blog.

It’s a great experience talking to different people around the world and helping them start profitable Internet businesses of their own. There’s a whole new world of possibilities on the Internet and it feels good to deliver this message to others.

Of course, I am a travel buff which makes the whole experience wonderful. I try to squeeze time out of these seminars and explore the city, savor its flavors and absorb the surroundings. Maybe it’s time for me to start a travel blog. So watch out, there might be a blogging case study coming soon.

If you have never been to an Internet Marketing event, look out for one in your city and attend when you get the chance. One thing I have realized is - the maximum success stories come from seminar attendees. These are people who take a serious step towards learning the possibilities and these are the people who finally take action.

The entire atmosphere of these seminars is electric. You meet new people… people who want the same thing out of life that you do. You make friends and many times, long term Joint Venture partners. You get trained by the best experts and coaches from around the world and of course, you get the opportunity to become their students. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth it. So, when you get the chance… go ahead and experience it yourself.

And, I am so glad I did. It was a wonderful experience speaking at GIS. Contrary to what I had in mind, Penang turned out to be a beautiful place. I loved the city, it’s friendly people and the food is to die for. I was visiting alone but I made up my mind to visit again with my wife and daughter.

The topic of my presentation was “Viral List Building” - an area of Internet Marketing that I passionately research and follow. It’s a shame that not many people use the wonders of viral marketing to grow their lists by huge numbers on auto-pilot. I got some great feedback on my presentation and (I think) the attendees really liked my views and strategies

What I am about to share with you is a form of Affiliate Marketing, but used by very few people. Those who do use it are making a bunch of money from it. But most people fail to see the awesome opportunity in this.

So what qualifies as a lead? That’s where it starts to get interesting. There are merchants that pay you for just an email address, others who may require an email and telephone number, yet others might want a postal address. But mostly, its never more than 5 fields depending on the offer you promote. And the payouts are handsome - it can range from $1 for a single field offer to $15 for a 5 field offer… sometimes even more.

Let me use an example to make this clearer. Let’s say, you sign up with a CPA network and decide to promote a merchant that pays for a single field - email address. Let’s break this scenario into 3 perspectives - the merchant’s, the affiliate’s and the visitors’ referred by the affiliate.

The merchant, in this scenario, can be either of the three - 1) The company that finally uses the lead hoping to make a sale in the future, or 2) A lead broker who collects leads and sells it to companies mentioned in #1, or 3) A third-party that gives your leads a free gift if they complete other offers in the backend for the kind of companies listed in #1 and #2.

In most cases, you’ll find the third kind of merchants listed with the CPA networks. These are guys who’ve made big businesses out of free offers and can afford to pay $1 - $15 per lead, depending on the quality of lead and the information collected.

Using the example I stated earlier, this merchant will give visitors a free gift - something like an IPOD, or an XBOX or a Laptop even - if this visitor completes a pre-determined number of offers in the backend, after providing his email ID. These offers involve filling out certain forms, surveys or maybe signing up for a free trial of some product. In each of these cases, the merchant gets paid by these bigger companies (which are the #1s and #2s as described earlier).

As for the visitor, it’s quite simple really. He goes to a website that features a free offer for an IPOD or an XBOX, etc. The visitor enters his email ID and he is redirected to the criteria-page where he’s shown a number of offers (surverys, fill forms, sign up for free trials) to complete. If he fulfills the requirement, the free gift is sent to him.

Now, to you - the affiliate! How do you fit in the the entire equation? You are responsible to send the visitors to these merchants. And when the visitors fill out the required fields (email, postal, zip, whatever), you get paid.

Are you with me? Let’s say you are promoting a merchant that pays $1 for a single field - email. And the offer is a free IPOD. You send visitors to a website that promises them a free IPOD and they have to fill out their email ID for more details. And the moment he enters his email ID, you have earned $1 in commission. You just got paid for giving away free stuff!

I know affiliates who make tens of thousands of dollars doing just this. It’s big money, if done the right way. All you have to do is come up with innovative ways to send visitors to the merchant’s landing page through your affiliate link.

Now that you know how this works, let me tell you why most people fail with this. Most people use a standard, traditional marketing approach to promote these offers. They buy expensive keywords on PPC, spend hours writing articles or doing forum marketing, writing blogs on the free offers… to promote the CPA offers. But traditional Affiliate Marketing tricks won’t get you any success with CPA pay-per-lead offers.

You have to be innovative in your approach. You’ve to cleverly disguise your marketing pitch. You’ve to think out of the box. So, for example - if you want to drive PPC traffic to these CPA offers, what kind of keywords will you bid on?

etc etc.. right?

WRONG!

These obvious keywords are extremely expensive and will burn a big hole in your pocket, let alone make you any money. This is what I mean by a traditional affiliate marketing approach. It won’t work if you want to be successful with CPA offers.

So what kind of keywords can you bid on? You’ve to think laterally to answer this question. Who else might be interested in a free ipod offer? What could they be searching for on Google? Are there any inexpensive (less than 5 cents) keywords you can use to target them?

There may be a large variety of people interested in a free ipod, right? Generally, someone searching for stuff on entertainment is a good target. People searching for movies, actors, actresses, etc might fit the bill. In fact, there are a ton of searches on these kind of keywords and the competition is almost zero. Which means, you can get such keywords for very very cheap.

The next and most important question is - how do you get people searching for these keywords to enter their email ID at the landing page of the merchant? How do you get them interested in the free ipod offer?

You have to somehow tie the two - the keyword they searched for and the free offer. And you have to involve them to take action. Here’s just one way to do it… let’s say there’s this guy who searches for the keyword ‘george clooney’… so he’s probably looking for some information on this actor, maybe his new releases, maybe just pictures/wallpapers, or his upcoming stints, etc.

Now, your job - as an effective CPA Marketer - is to send this searcher to your merchant’s landing page where he fills out his email ID. So your PPC ad has to tie up ‘george clooney’ with the free ipod offer. You can simply say something like - “Is George Clooney too old to act? Take this poll and get a free ipod”.

When searchers click on this ad, you take them to a simple poll you host at your own website/blog or even a third party poll provider. When they submit their answer, redirect them to your affiliate link for the ‘free ipod’ merchant.

Here’s what goes inside the searcher’s mind with this setup. He/she searched for George Clooney looking for info on his movies, etc. So he/she is obviously interested in the actor. When they search, they see your ad asking ‘Is George Clooney too old to act?’…. they will, in most cases, have an opinion on a topic like this.

Then, you give them a little nudge by saying - ‘Take the poll and get a free ipod’. Now, they have 2 motives to click on your ad - one, they have an opinion they might want to share and two, they get something free for doing just that.

Now, the searcher clicks on your ad and sees a yes/no poll which he is almost definite to fill out. And once he does that, he goes to the merchant’s landing page which says something like - ‘Get a free ipod. Enter your email to proceed’.

When he fills out his email id, you get paid! Simple, right?

It is, in fact, simple! However, since you’re dealing with low end commissions like $1, you must be careful with your ad spends. Track everything… and I mean everything - the CPC (cost per click) of your ad, the CTR (click through rate) on your ad, what percentage make it to the merchant’s landing page, conversion rate for signups, etc. Track regularly, and make necessary changes to improve the conversion rates.

CPA Affiliate Marketing is a numbers game and you just can’t afford to neglect that. Once you have a profitable campaign, go ahead and replicate it. Try other keywords, different merchants. The possibilities are endless. Some popular CPA networks you can apply to are maxbounty.com, azoogleads.com, cpastorm.com, neverblueads.com, etc. A quick Google search will return many more networks.

Tools like Word Tracker, Good Keywords, Overture’s Search Tool, etc etc became an absolute necessity for Internet Marketers. Some of these are free and others subscription based. Most of the features these tools offer are similar - they give you a set of possible keywords you can use for your niche, the popularity of these keywords and so on.

Big Daddy Google has its own keyword tool too:

Since this comes from Google, it was in my must-use list of tools. However, till a few months back this tool had some limitations which made it less appealing. So while most other tools would give an exact number of searches performed on various keywords, Google’s tool would give a relative indication. One had to judge keyword-demand based on qualitative phrases - low/medium/high search volume instead of exact numbers.

From a personal perspective, I was using the other tools (and not just Google’s) because hard numbers are always pleasing to the eye and give a better insight. Well, it seems many others thought the same and Google finally added this feature to their own tool.

Now when you search for a keyword in Google’s external keyword tool, it gives you raw numbers for searches done on the various keywords. They give you an average number of searches as well as those done in the last month.

Yes, most of the other tools gave this data but how reliable were they? When it comes from the Big Daddy, you know there is more truth to it. After all, Google is the most popular search engine of all. They have a huge database of user queries. The other tools extrapolate the numbers based on a sample, but Google has its own database to pull up those numbers.

I am simply loving this added feature, as it saves me a lot of time. Now, I don’t use a dozen tools to get a proper estimation of keyword demand. I do use a few others to get more keyword ideas, but don’t look at their search numbers anymore. That is all through the Google tool.

There are two more additions I would love to see in Google’s keyword tool. As of now, they give competition data for the keywords, but its again a qualitative thing - low/medium/high advertiser competition. I wish they give us a hard number for this column too - so we know exactly how many advertisers are bidding on a particular keyword.

The second addition I’d love to see is, of course, a bigger keyword list. Right now, they give about 100 or so keyword suggestions. I hope they expand this so we get a wider range of long-tails. With these additions, the Google Keyword Tool will become a near-perfect solution for all keyword researchers.

It wasn’t like the hacker defaced my blog or had any weird messages scrolling all over it. But he did hack into my wordpress files and flooded it with all sorts of scam links - pharma stuff for enhancement, for shrinkage.. you name it.

And it affected me bad. The scam links/text were visible all over Google whenever my blog posts showed up in their results. So the title in the Google results would say “death of affiliate marketing” (just an example), but the description had glorified explanations and offers on the pharmaceutical marvels of today.

It didn’t take Google long to drop me in their search rankings and remove most of my pages from their index. At the time of writing this post, my blog has only 29 pages indexed in Google. Just 2 months back, I remember seeing 300+ pages from this blog in their listings.

I don’t think I need to explain how much that affected my blog traffic. All because some automated script created by some hacker injected 1000s of scam links to my Wordpress header and footer files.

After a lot of research and reading dozens of blogs and forums, I traced the problem (?) and deleted these scam links from the header and footer files. I felt good, thanked Google for leading me to all the useful information and cursed the hacker one last time.

Or so I wished…

The very next day, the scam-links were back… in all their glory and in bigger numbers this time. I was demolished. I cursed - cursed technology, cursed Google, cursed the hacker, cursed anyone who came in front of me then. I was at a complete loss.

But even in that situation, I had no one else but Google to go to. There I was again, asking Mighty Google for the root cause of my problem. And like always, Google had answers. Every single time - the wonders of the Internet

This time around, I was supposed to upgrade my Wordpress installation. I was running an older version which was plagued with bugs. Upgrading a software that my web host had installed at the click of a button seemed like an uphill task. But Fantastico (the automatic installer application that comes with most hosting accounts) made it a walk in the park.

So here I am, all upgraded to Wordpress 2.5.something in under 15 minutes. And hoping it keeps them hackers at bay!

Whenever I see such a piece, all I do is smile, roll a shoulder and wonder at the naivety of some earthly creatures. Well, they do have their reasons to believe that Affiliate Marketing will die soon. But I am not convinced with any of their reasoning. I just fail to see the logic in their arguments.

Here’s my take on it - Affiliate Marketing is here to stay.. for a long long time! And I do have strong reasons to make such a statement. I will get into that in just a bit.

But first, let’s see how Wikipedia defines Affiliate Marketing..

“Affiliate Marketing is a web-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing efforts”

When we read this, we see that their are 4 groups involved in Affiliate Marketing:

1) The Business (normally referred to as ‘Merchants’ in the Industry)
2) The Affiliates
3) The Customers
4) The Web

Let’s look at each group one by one. Merchants are companies that sell their products and/or services on the Internet. They run a website that serves as a medium to accomplish this. Long back, when e-commerce was just born, these websites had to rely on self-generated traffic to make these online sales. This often cost the merchants a lot of money.

And then came Affiliate Marketing. A concept that, almost overnight, gave these online merchants a large number of sales people. That’s what affiliates are, right? A salesforce for the merchants they choose to promote. And what could be better for the merchants? They paid these sales people only if they performed (made sales, generated leads, whatever). This was like a dream come true for them. And it still is.

What’s my point? The point is that merchants just love affiliates and Affiliate Marketing. They can never be part of a conspiracy that leads to the ‘Death of Affiliate Marketing’. Agreed, some affiliate practices piss them off. But that doesn’t mean they will suddenly pull the plug on affiliates. Like I said, they just love affiliates and will continue to do so.

The second group are the affiliates themselves. This group has been highly rewarded from the concept called Affiliate Marketing. It has enabled them to work for themselves and yet earn more than a regular job. Some affiliates have even created multi million dollar companies - these are the guys who run the comparison sites, the cash back and the coupon sites, etc. This is one group
that will never endorse the ‘Kill Affiliates’ campaign.

How about customers? Well, for a large part, the customers are not even aware of something called Affiliate Marketing. But, even unknowingly, they are the most rewarded group. How is that? Think about it - it’s because of affiliate marketing that the customers enjoy comparison shopping, discount coupons and cash backs. Its affiliates who bring these wonderful goodies to the
prospective customers. I am sure this group has nothing to complain about either.

Which brings me to the last group - The Web. Well, it’s not really a group.. rather a medium. But this medium is, by and large, controlled by a group of Web giants like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and now the hugely popular Web 2.0 websites, etc etc. This group of giants, amongst themselves, enjoy bulk of the Web share.

So what’s their take on Affiliate Marketing? Barring certain wrong practices, this group enjoys the benefits of Affiliate Marketing too. It adds a whole lot to their bottom line. The search engine majors have a large number of affiliates paying for their sponsored ads, which accounts for a large part of their revenue. Agreed Google and other companies impose restrictions every now and then. They have their own reasons for that, but they are not shunning affiliates altogether.

And hey, PPC is just one of the many media for affiliates. So even if that goes out, their are other ways for them to reach customers. With the growing popularity of Web 2.0 companies, their is a whole new medium awaiting affiliates. Companies like Facebook, etc have just opened the doors to Social Marketing - which is poised to become a giant in the years ahead. And they are vying for the affiliate pie.

The point is - affiliates contribute a large amount to the Internet Advertising space. So if one web giant shuts their doors to affiliates, others will jump on to the opportunity and gladly embrace us affiliates. We have seen this happen before, and it will continue to happen. Affiliates will never run out of advertising choices, because these Web giants are fighting for a piece of their business.

To sum up… 3 out of the 4 parties involved in Affiliate Marketing are more than happy with the concept. And the 4th group (The Web), which serves as a medium for affiliates to find customers, have a lot at stake if they decide otherwise.

In fact, I will go a step further to say that the 4th group (the medium, the web) is the only changing factor in the entire equation. The merchants, the customers and the affiliates are the stable factors. Only the medium will change over time.

Bottom line… Affiliate Marketing is here to stay. The ‘Death Of Affiliate Marketing’ is, in fact, a dead argument.

It turned out to be a good decision. I was able to relate to everything this guy talks about. And he is just too good. No wonder he sold millions of copies.

Just a few chapters in, and I could literally see the changes I need to bring about in my own business - in my Internet Marketing activities. And by now, I have already started implementing those changes.

If you haven’t read this book, let me tell you real quick - through out the book, Robert Kiyosaki stresses the importance of ‘income producing assets’. Assets that give you a passive income over and over again. The idea is that once your ‘income producing assets’ give you enough residual income to meet your expenses, you become ‘financially free’.

You see, there is no rocket science here. So you must be thinking how all of this is relevant in the Internet Marketing world.

It’s quite simple really! All of your activities - whether its blogging, affiliate marketing, lead generation, pay per clicks - all these are investments that we make in our business. Now, this could be an investment in terms of money or time.

After reading ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ it became quite clear to me that all my investments in Internet Marketing should be targeted at generating a recurring or residual income. So, for example, if I promote a product as an affiliate, I should pick those products that give me a recurring income. This means I should be promoting membership sites rather than stand-alone products. Or, another one - if I create a blog, I should optimize it and take it to a level that it gives me X amount every month. And then I move on to creating more such blogs.

The idea is to create a passive income, to create ‘assets’ that pay you every month - without you doing any additional work on it. And once this residual income outgrows your expenses, you become financially free.

I have started making some changes in my business model - changes in tune with Robert Kiyosaki’s teachings in ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’. Of course, its not possible to change overnight.. it will take a few months to be 100% Rich Dad compliant but I am trying to get there.

It’s an impressive book and the teachings are totally relevant in the world of Internet Marketing. If you haven’t read it yet, I suggest you pick up a copy.

Having said that, I know it’s not as easy to create web pages as many Internet Marketers will have you believe. BUt then again, its not so tough either. If you can work Microsoft Word, you can make a simple web page too.

There may be times when you want to quickly edit an existing web page, or maybe create a new squeeze page (to capture leads) or get that blog into shape. There are some softwares out there that can make this task quite simple for you.

Among others, I have tried Microsoft Frontpage, Dreamweaver and very recently, NVU.

Frontpage is easy to use and very similar to Microsoft Word. If you can work with MS Word, Frontpage should come easy to you. Personally, I used Frontpage right from the beginning of my Internet Marketing career till a few months back. Its user friendliness appealed to me… but lately I realized that it messes up the HTML codes, thus making the web pages less search engine friendly. Plus, this software comes at a cost.

Dreamweaver is an advanced piece of software and not that user friendly. It has a whole lot of features but it has a steep learning curve. Also, Dreamweaver can burn quite a hole in your pocket.

That brings us down to NVU. I have recently started using this software and am completely in love with it. It is as user-friendly as Frontpage, has some really nice, cool features (I love the little ‘crosses and arrows’ functionality next to each page element) and you can get started with it rather quickly. Plus, its completely free to use (just download it from www.nvu.com). And yes, it produces clean html codes that search engines love.

So, as of now, the clear choice is NVU. You dont have to know html coding or any other computer languages to get your first web page or squeeze page up. If you can work with MS Word, then you are fully qualified to create a web page with NVU.
