Instant Affiliate Profits at Zero Cost

Posted in Affiliate Marketing, Internet Marketing, Web 2.0 at 5:02 am by Alok Jain

Over the last few years, a number of Web 2.0 sites have been launched. And some of them have come as a boon to Internet Marketers. Well, many people still don’t realise the power of these websites. But there are other smart Marketers who have used these Web 2.0 sites to their full potential.

I have noticed that one particular website has been used by some smart affiliates to generate commissions without spending a dime on their own. In this article, I will show how you too can use that site to generate instant affiliate profits.

The website I’m referring to is www.squidoo.com. Squidoo is a website where you can create your own web pages (they call it lenses) on any topic. You register with them for free, think of a topic, give a name to your’lens’, put some content on it and publish it.

So how can this be of any help to you? Here’s how - Google loves Squidoo and their lenses (web pages) get good rankings in the Google search results. Which means that a well developed lens can get you hoardes of free traffic.

Let me explain this with a few examples. Recently, there was a big product launch. The ebook was called “Project Black Mask” and it sold 1000s of copies in the first few days. Huge number of people were searching for the term “Project Black Mask” on Google, to get reviews of the product. Many people still search this keyword.

I searched for the keyword myself and this is what I saw:

Screenshot of Google Search Results

Notice the third result in the natural listings. Its an “Under Construction” lens on Squidoo. The guy who owns the lens has no content on it whatsoever but he still has the third ranking on a very popular ebook. Had he put some content, reviewed the product and put in his affiliate link in there - he would have made a killing.

Another example. This one is “Day Job Killer”, an ebook that broke all sales records on Clickbank. I remember that during launch day, there were over 10,000 searches on this keyword. There are many searches on it even today. Look at the results:

Screenshot of Google Search Results

See the number 4 result - again a Squidoo lens. This time the guy has got some content on it with his affiliate link. Imagine the kind of commissions he makes for creating a free web page.

You can search for any number of these ebooks and you will find a Squidoo page up there. Notice the name of the lenses - this is the part after www.squidoo.com/

In both the examples, the name of the lens includes the name of the ebook. This gives the page more weightage for that keyword on Google and helps in its ranking.

This is a very smart way to make some quick affiliate commissions, without spending any money whatsoever. Here’s a step by step guide to use this technique:

1) Do some searches on popular ebooks and look up the Squidoo lenses that are ranked high. Make a note of their content, writing style, affiliate links, etc. These lenses are doing it right and you want to copy their style.

2) Find out what Internet Marketing products are going to launch in the recent future. Remember, you are looking for products that have a potential of becoming popular. So go after the products from the Gurus, the big guys. You can sign up with www.imnewswatch.com to keep track of these launches.

3) Create a lens on Squidoo. Give it a name that includes the name of the product. You can use dashes or underscores as well.

4) Develop the lens on the same lines as the ones which get good rankings in Google. Include your affiliate links a number of times.

That’s it. Just wait for Google to pick up your lens and list it for the targeted keyword. If you do things right, you will surely make handsome affiliate commissions.

Do let me know what you think by posting your comments below.

Squidoo no longer ranks so highly in Google results, thanks to the huge number of spam lenses. Squidoo’s working to reverse this, but for right now, search engine traffic isn’t extremely high on Squidoo lenses.

It’s still a great place to make a landing page for article marketing, especially at those directories that don’t allow affiliate links.

    Hi Jay,

A well constructed Squidoo lens is not considered spam. Even if its used to review an ebook or a software.

Also, the screenshots I have shown have been taken today. I agree that, in the long run, Squidoo and/or Google will take measures that will dilute the effectiveness of this technique. But right now, it seems to be working.

    Hi Alok,
Yes,once again you have a great idea, but it is like i said to you before…it is only easy if you know how to use the sites.
I must be a bit dim or something because like the forums i get lost on these
sites, you know what i mean when your new to anything it takes time to learn how to post and get involved. One thing i don’t understand though is that i used a method from the bum marketing guide and i am currently at the top of google with this and have been for a while now….but have still not got any sales from it,….how come.
The search term if you want to have a look is:-
how to earn online report for 9.97 dollars
If you miss off dollars at the end i am in the next search listing .

I have to agree with Jay. It seems that Google has
cracked down on Squidoo lenses but if you’re willing
to put up a good indepth lense you can still get some
traffic from it and maybe a few sales.

    Hi Alok

I entirely agree with your plan. I have recently made a nice chunk of money from my Squidoo lens at http://www.squidoo.com/membershipsitesbootcamp/ which ranks at the top on Google. However I must confess that I did put some useful information on the topic of the lens to hook the reader into staying longer.

While it is true that many squidoo lenses have suffered a loss in ranking at Google because of the recent slap, Alok makes an excellent point in the fact that well constructed, informative lenses are not considered spam and many of those lenses are still showing up on the first page of Google.

Try Googling free1up.com and you’ll see what I mean.

    Content remains King!

    Hi,

Great info! Just as an addition, I have found that my squidoo lenses are not always picked up by google, but when I digg them, my digg site shows up higher than squidoo! Also, it helps to join as many relevant groups on squidoo as you can to get your lens higher up in squidoo.

That’s correct Rodney. In fact, a search for most of the top Clickbank sellers throws up Squidoo lenses in the first page of Google results.

Just make sure you copy the best. Look at those lenses that rank well, see their construct and make yours on similar lines.

Don’t indulge in overkill by using a very high keyword density or pasting your affiliate link too often. Stay within the limits, put in some good content and the results will be pleasing.

    Hi Alok,
It’s nice to catch up again, particularly as you have once again demonstrated why you are head and shoulders above the other “Gurus”.
Squidoo is a subject that gets mentioned often, but generally in a manner that infers the reader should already know all about it. Well as this Blog demonstrates, a lot of hopeful internet marketers don’t understand it, and full credit to you for taking the time to explain Squidoo in simple terms.
I can understand some people having reservations about the ongoing viability of Squidoo, and I know that its easy to set up a lens and not get the results you hoped for, but Squidoo is no different to any other online tool, you must have good quality content relevant to your keywords. This is vital, otherwise the spiders will ignore you.
So, in a nutshell, Squidoo used properly is a great tool, and will currently outperform the various alternatives.
    Best wishes to all,
    Pete

Traffic is all well and good, but what a site really needs is traffic that converts. Everyone is after traffic; the trick is to get buyers not just traffic–or sign-ups, if opt-ins is what you’re after. It’s about quality, not quantity. Sure, you want some quantity, that’s obvious, but what you really want is a lot of buyers, not tire-kickers or looky-lous.

Given adequate traffic, conversion is really the name of the game; it’s what puts the cash in your pocket. Traffic is relatively easy; converting the traffic takes skill. Finding quality traffic takes skill, and then converting it will be relatively easier than trying to sell people who basically are not in buying mode, or who are not sufficiently targeted.

Vero, you are right about quality traffic. Else it is a waste. But this method will give you the most targetted traffic ever. Your visitors are people who searched for the product that you have reviewed in your lens.

Write a good review (highlighting pros and cons, etc) and the traffic is bound to convert.

Squidoo is perfect for bum marketing. I made my first Clickbank commissions (7 to be exact) this summer using nothing but a Squidoo lens.

    My advice:

-learn how to structure a lens for affiliate marketing
-research and use the right tags (keywords)
    -join top rated Squidoo groups
-submit your lens to the search engines & social bookmark it
-write articles w/links to the lens & submit them EzineArticles,
SearchWarp and other high PR article directories.

Ive found that having the you tube video module helps a lens, but keep the same vids on there. the ones that get aolt of views, and ones that are relevant to your content. You do not want your vids changing all the time.

Having those vids on the lenses can get you a link back from you tube to your lense. More later on this, if anyone is interested. Just give it a try and see how it goes. Ill post a link to a lens that is using that very method for the extra traffic from you tube, and some other info later…

Good Article. Question: do you think a squidoo lens would be helpful in getting signups to free programs, or signups to free e-zines? I have poked around the “squidooverse” a little, but since I am on a 3 year old computer (with DIAL UP—AAAGH) it is difficult to impossible to do a lot with web 2.0 sites.

On a slightly different topic, a suggestion:

I would caution all marketers, and perhaps you could write a future article on this: Learn to construct a USEABLE website! There are many websites I can’t access AT ALL unless I go to a library and use high speed, because of all the flash/splash/UTube bells and whistles. When I build a website of any kind, for myself or friends, I make sure it loads quickly and completely on computers like mine: older, slower and on dialup. I built one for a friend last week that had 2 options on the very fast loading doorway page: an option for Low Speed and one for high speed. Not only will I not bother with any guru’s site that is overloaded with excess stuff– I actively reccommend to those who ask that they avoid such sites as well.

It is perfectly possible (as a metter of fact, EASY) to sell a product without the splash/flash/UTube/audio video etc. Am I the only person who remembers fondly those bygone days when a sales website had serious content, was well written, and maybe had one or two ordinary pictures along with a lot of valuable information (as opposed to hype and tripe)?

    Alok.

I just want to say thanks again for the information you sent me recently on how to promote Clickbank products at zero cost. Well! I want to share my progress with you.

I went ahead and did a search for new products at imnewswatch as you suggested. I found one, built a lens at squidoo around the name of the product and also wrote a few articles pointing back to the lens.

These were published at ezinearticles, hubpages, a link on a PR4 site I have, and a simple advt. at usfreeads where I have an account already.

To my surprise, my usfreead advt for the Lens showed up no. 7 on Google.
So, yes, go ahead and look for “The Millionaire League” at Google and you
will see a Bizz Wizz ad (from usfreeads) on the first page, entitled

“No monthly Fees To Join Millionaire League” That’s mine.

No, I don’t even know if I have any sales yet. I’m heading over to C/Bank
right now, but I just wanted to say thanks for your suggestion. My lens, by the way is at The MillionaireLeague

    Thanks again,
    Anthony

Squidoo is not only a good place to make money with targeted Lenses. It also sends traffic back to your site. I use it alot to drive traffic to my main site http://www.rolandosgiftshop.com.

Another great Web2.0 site that drives traffic if you sell physical products is http://www.wists.com/ a social swaping site.

    Best Regards

PS - Don’t forget about del.icio.us, furl, technorati, kaboodle, digg and other social networking sites to generate traffic to your sites.

    Hi Alok,

Thanks for sharing a great post.

I’ve been using squidoo for some time no and find it great and in my experience if you update your lens regularly with some text content, keep outbound links to a minimum and join as many related groups as you can you should see your lens climb the rankings very quickly both in squidoo and google.

Once you’ve got a decent ranking lens, simply create more keyword related lenses and lensroll them together.

    Thanks,

    Hi all,
I have also been using Squidoo to help get traffic to some of my websites and affiliate products as well. One tool I have found to be effective is Micro Niche Finder. You can watch some videos and see this program in action.

Oops! To finish up, Micro Niche Finder can be used to help you find what people are looking for, and if the competition for that niche is strong or weak. It’s worth looking at the videos - the videos show you how to use it with virtually any website, blog, etc. Go find out how to target a niche with this program now!

After you do that, follow this link to one of my Squidoo lenses. I came up with the lens name by using the Micro Niche Finder, and it has been getting good targeted traffic.

While your there, you can check out the links to the affiliate product that is benefitting from the traffic coming from this Squidoo Lens. Do you have a dog? Why not sign up for the free report while you are there :)
I will share some actual traffic stats here later, after I login to squidoo and check them.

Hi there Alok, I am so impressed with all the information that you share and I will definately give Squidoo a try. I am fairly new to all this and am very keen to learn how to make money online.

Having read the comments above it would seem that you have a very large fan club which I am pleased to have joined. So once again thank you and keep all the great advice and tips coming - I sure need them!

I ever read the suggest like this post about squidoo. Its hard to me to create my own suidoo. So, I still focused on my own blog and not create more site just for traffic.

I think, if I wanna get more traffic from search engine (like Google) I must have a blog site with the right blog software that support multi author (just like what I’ve build. Coz, multi author will help all to growth together in blog style. As everybody known, Google and Yahoo search engine loved blogs.

I am setting up a site to guide new marketers through and past the information overload, believe everything you read, keep thinking the next product is going to be THE one that will make you wealthy sickness that seems to afflict most people thinking about starting an online business.
There is quality help out there, but it seems you have to wade through the bottom feeders to find it.
Keep up the good work! You are one of the good guys!

For a detailed outline of how to use Squidoo effectively, you should read J.P. Schoeffel’s Squidoo Profits. It’s a PDF, and it goes into pretty much all aspects of using Squidoo. I will warn you… to use Squidoo effectively as J.P. recommends, it takes a bit of work. If it fits your business model, go for it. If not, then creating a lens here and there can be a pretty easy way to create a valuable backlink to your site.

Alok has a good idea in using IM products, but a better idea might be Andrew Hansen’s concept of creating your own site around new IM releases. Andrew warns (and rightly so) that you can’t really build a business around this, but I actually think that you could, if you planned things carefully, and did it a certain way. HTH!

David - thank you for the kind words in your comment above =) I try to share as much as I can about Squidoo and help others get going with this free opportunity to boost their business or online presence.

Squidoo is not all that new to the IM scene. Yes, the site went thru a huge growth spurt - and then naturally, growing pains resulted. One person mass-created 400+ lenses in ONE DAY - all spammy garbage using to frame in content that was not relevant to the keyword he/she was focusing on. Google did not like this and the whole Squidoo site suffered for a little while.

In my opinion, that little “speed bump” was a good thing that drew attention to the holes in the system that could (and were) compromised which, in turn, allowed Squidoo to do some spring-cleaning and make the site even better.

A real quick tip for using Squidoo -

So many struggle with the “keyword” concept - it seems that they either try to slam pack too many - or don’t have a keyword focus at all.

Take a free keyword research tool like wordtrackers ( http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ ) and type in what your content is to be about. Then try to work each of the smaller and related keywords into your content and as titles for your modules, etc. Have them flow naturally into your content and suit the readers experience.

Remember, just like the lens on a camera, a Squidoo lens will FOCUS IN on a subject. Don’t be too broad or general - and keep to the topic at hand. After creating your lens, wait for the next Squidoo update, THEN “ping” your lens and do your social tagging and marketing.

I’m always available to answer any questions over at my blog:

    Best of luck to all!

    Hi

Saw this place just yesterday. The idea of creating squidoo lenses seemed interesting. Created my first lens at http://www.squidoo.com/honestincomeprogram

Can somebody please look it over and say if I need to add or delete any material there, I mean the best way to construct squidoo lenses (btw the lens is a review of Honest Income Program

    Would be grateful for feedback.

    Hi Alok

I created my first lens at squidoo [snip]
On the first day my rank was 704 in SEO and Affiliate Marketing with a lensrank of more than 21,000. I am updating it regularly and now it has come to 248 rank in SEO and Affiliate Marketing and the current lensrank is 8409 (after all, there is some improvement).

I had requested on some feedback and guidance on it around a week back but I see that till now there is no comment on it. Can you kindly look it over and suggest remedial action. Another thing, even with a lensrank of 8409, Google still doesn’t seem to have indexed it. When I try to search for Honest Income Program, my lens doesn’t show at all. Howsoever I search it does not come up. I even tried searching for the full name ‘Review of Honest Income Program’ but no help.

Can you shed some light on it. What else I need to do, or I will have to wait longer.

    Will be grateful for advice.

The position of my lens rose further to 33 (from 248) in SEO and Affiliate Marketing and the lensrank also increased from 8409 to 913. Some improvement !

I have now created another lens on the latest and hottest product “20 Ways To Make $100 A Day Online” and the url is [snip]
This product teaches how anybody can earn $100 per day for life if we follow the steps outlined in the product. It is very interesting and has been written by some very well-established people.

I have not yet made any sales from the first lens, but am confident that I will do it soon. (hopefully)

I thank Alok for giving this wonderful tip.

    Hi

Alok is steadily gaining a reputation as a person who provides handy and useful information which can be used all and sundry. Just see his information about creating a squidoo lens (I myself created a lens and now it has a PR 2 ranking (www.squidoo.com/honestincomeprogram).

He is about to launch yet another product on Nov 29. He has aptly named it as “Project Quick Cash”. It lets you implement some easy techniques and earns you 100s, maybe 1000s. Best of all, they are easy and can be done even by a newbie.

You can read more about it either at his site itself http://www.projectquickcash.com or at my blog http://buyprojectquickcash.blogspot.com/

I am just waiting for Nov 29 when I can lay my hands on this wonderful product. People are falling over each other for this product. Just do a quick search on Google or any other search engines.

All the best to Alok for a successful launch.
